Taikile/Taikilo is a leafy vegetable mostly available during monsoon season. In English it is named as cassia tora, chagate soppu in kannada, thagara cheera in malayam and thojanku as in tulu.We Mangalore GSB’s prepare variety of dishes with these leaves. It has lots of medicinal values.
Dishes like taikilo bikkand upkari,dangar/ambado,tambali/chutney are the other varieties prepared with this leaf.Today I am sharing Thaikile muddo recipe with you all.

Few name this dish as Muddo and some as sanna khotto. Muddo is the same as Sanna khotto.Khotto is a small cup shaped, here jackfruit leaves are  stitched together to give a shape called khotto which is  then filled with batter, whereas muddo is steamed in banana leaves. The leaf gives a different flavour to this muddo. These can also be steamed in Idli moulds or in a plain plates too.

Sanna muddo is a spicy dish like idli , it is served as a side dish with main course or as a evening snack drizzled with generous coconut oil on top. This is a versatile recipe.Same recipe can be adapted with greens like methi and drumstick leaves and cabbage too along with chopped onion. For thaikile muddo we do not add onions as it would dominate the unique taste of taikilo.

Ingredients:-

  1. Raw Rice – 3/4 th cup
  2. Toor dal -1/4 th cup
  3. Grated coconut – 1 cup
  4. Red chillies – 5-8
  5. Tamarind – small bit
  6. Hing – 1 tsp
  7. Salt to taste
  8. Taikile leaves –  1/2 cup (cleaned and chopped finely)
  9. Banana leaves 3-4
  10. Coconut oil -1 tsp

Method:-

  • Soak the rice and toor dal together for 2-3 hrs.
  • Grind grated coconut, red chillies, tamarind and hing to a smooth paste.Add salt and the soaked dal and rice.
  • Grind again to a not so smooth paste but little coarse like rava consistency.

Add cleaned, washed and finely chopped taikilo to this batter and mix thoroughly.

Wipe Banana leaves with a wet cloth, then with a dry one to ensure that no water is there on the leaves. Cut them into rectangular/square pieces (as shown in the pic below). Now take a fist full of the taikile batter and keep on the banana leaf.

After keeping the batter on the leaf, then fold it vertically on both sides and then the other two sides too to look like a packet.

Similarly continue with the rest of the batter.
Arrange these in a steamer and steam cook for about 20- 25 minutes.

Taikile Muddo is ready to serve with rice or as a snack for evening tea/coffee.
Drizzle coconut oil on top of the steamed cakes to enjoy the real taste !
